Helicopter FAQs

Why does a helicopter need EVS?
Many helicopter operations involve:

  • Law Enforcement
  • Air Ambulance
  • Search & Rescue
  • Maritime Patrol
  • Environmental Surveillance
  • Medical Equipment/Organ Transport
  • Executive Transport
  • Shuttle Operations
  • Fire Fighting
  • Timber Transport

These types of operations often require:

  • Operating into or out of difficult or sloping terrain
  • Flying/hovering in poor visibility such as darkness, smoke, haze, dust etc
  • Monitoring obstacles in darkness such as trees, stumps or high voltage lines etc
  • Terrain following or flying/hovering close to the ground or water
  • Pilot acquisition of target in darkness or poor visibility
  • Additional safety margins because of dangerous roles

EVS provides the pilot with a video-like image of the area in front of the helicopter, even in darkness. This helps the pilot achieve better situational awareness in these unfamiliar surroundings.

On a helicopter, where is EVS mounted?
The EVS can be mounted in the nose, on the belly or along the landing skids of the helicopter.

On a helicopter, where is EVS displayed?
Any cockpit video-capable display will work. If there is no such display available in the cockpit, the image can be shown on a dedicated display such as a Rosen or DeCrane LCD display.
